Frequently asked questions

We classify this tour as Intermediate. The challenge does not mainly come from daily riding distance (60-80km/day), but the high elevation around Qinghai Lake at 3200–3300 m. To help you acclimatize gradually, we arrange a day tour in Xining (2200 m) right after your arrival.

The prime cycling season around Qinghai Lake runs from June to September.

  • June & early July: Wild rapeseed flowers start blooming, with milder temperatures and fewer tourists. It is ideal for riders who prefer quieter roads.
  • Late July to August: Full bloom of the vast rapeseed fields, iconic golden scenery beside the blue lake. This is the most popular window, yet roads will be busier.
  • September: Cool crisp weather, fewer crowds, and stunning autumn colours. Temperatures drop quickly in the evenings, so warm layers are essential.

May and October are possible but colder, with a higher chance of wind, rain and occasional frost. Winter cycling around Qinghai Lake is not recommended.
