About this tour

Qiandao Lake is a large man-made freshwater reservoir in Chun’an County, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. It was created in 1959 for the Xin’anjiang Hydropower Station. When the reservoir flooded the valley, more than one thousand mountain peaks turned into islands. At the standard water level, there are 1,078 islands above water, hence the name “Qiandao Lake” (Thousand Island Lake).

Highlights:

Underwater ancient cities: Two well-preserved ancient towns, Shicheng and Hecheng, are submerged under the lake, a rare underwater cultural relic site.

Scenery: Emerald water dotted with green islands. The exposed yellowish soil around island edges forms the famous “golden belt” landscape.

Local food: Famous for Qiandao Lake fish head soup.

Activities: Island cruises, hiking, cycling, paragliding, boating and lake-view resorts.

Location & Travel

It sits on the golden travel route: Hangzhou — Qiandao Lake — Huangshan Mountain. Visitors usually spend 1–3 days here. Meifeng Island is the most popular sightseeing island for panoramic lake views.

Qiandaohu Lake Cycling Tour delivers a captivating ride across the scenic heart of eastern China, weaving together quiet countryside, riverside hamlets and the iconic blue waters of Thousand Island Lake (Qiandao Lake).

Starting in Hangzhou, your journey rolls through the peaceful towns of Tonglu and Jiande, then follows lakeside roads circling the stunning Thousand Island Lake. Pedal past forested hills, riverside farmlands and hidden villages, soaking in the gentle misty beauty of Zhejiang’s landscape.

Difficulty Level: Moderate

The route has only gentle rolling terrain, no steep mountain climbs. Suitable for recreational cyclists used to riding 80–100km per day. Full support vehicle is provided.

Elevation Profile

This Hangzhou Qiandao cycling route stays at low to moderate elevations across the Fuchun River and Thousand Island Lake region.

  • Hangzhou starting point: ~10 m
  • Tonglu & Jiande riverside greenways: 20–120 m, mostly flat with gentle rolling undulations
  • Thousand Island Lake loop: The highest points on the lakeside greenways reach around 350 m, with short, mild climbs and descents between lake bays.

Road Conditions

The majority of this Zhejiang cycling route uses dedicated riverside greenways. These segregated, car‑free paths are built exclusively for cyclists and pedestrians, completely separated from motor vehicles. Only a small portion of the journey is on quiet provincial roads.

The riverside greenways follow the water’s edge, lined with bamboo woods and farmland. The surface is smooth asphalt, ideal for road bikes. The terrain consists of gentle rolling ups and downs, without long steep mountain passes.

Best Time to Cycle: March to May & September to November

Spring (March–May): Lush fresh greenery, blooming flowers along the Fuchun River and Thousand Island Lake greenways. Temperatures are mild and comfortable for cycling, with occasional light spring drizzle. This is a wonderful season to enjoy bamboo forests and riverside pastoral scenery.

Autumn (September–November): Crisp air, clear skies and softer golden light perfect for photography. Humidity drops significantly, with fewer rainy days and pleasant daytime temperatures. Autumn is widely regarded as the top season for this route.
