Sitting between 47°05′‑53°20′ N and 115°13′‑126°04′ E in northeastern Inner Mongolia, Hulunbuir is China’s largest prefecture-level city, spanning 253,000 km² with a population of 2.119 million. It shares borders with Russia and Mongolia. The Greater Khingan Range holds vast primeval boreal forests; its ridges separate forested eastern hills from the endless steppe of western Hulunbuir.
Heishantou grassland averages 10–24°C, while Hailar sits at 12–25°C. Days are comfortably mild, free from the stifling heat of southern China. Note the large temperature swing between day and night.
Start in Hailar amid endless Hulunbuir grasslands. Cycle north past Erguna’s wide wetlands and the birch-lined village of Enhe. Follow the K-line border road along the winding Erguna boundary river to Shiwei, tracing the western foothills of the Greater Khingan Range. Continue to Heishantou, famous for spectacular grassland sunsets, before looping back to Hailar.
