While most travellers stick to the coastal roads of Hainan Island, this Central Highland Cycling route takes you deep into Hainan’s inland hinterland and skip crowded viewpoints and seaside crowds.
Experience authentic local culture and pristine rainforest scenery, Winding through rubber plantations, betel nut groves and lush tropical valleys, this route leads to the foot of Wuzhi Mountain. Hear birdsong and forest sounds, with only rare vehicles passing by.
This is the real Hainan. Far from beaches and resorts, discover the island’s original mountain communities and rich rainforest wilderness.
Difficulty Level: Challenging
Total distance: 325 km, with a cumulative elevation gain of 3570 m across 4 riding days. Day 3 features the biggest climb at 1400 m. Traffic remains light, though some stretches have steep rolling gradients and shaded, damp road surfaces within the tropical rainforest.
Riders need strong endurance for long hours in the saddle and sustained climbing. Previous experience riding in hilly terrain is recommended. Rest stops are available but sparse in remote mountain sections.
Mostly smooth, well-paved provincial and county asphalt roads. Traffic is light. A few short village lanes have minor surface wear; no gravel or off-road sections. Great for road and gravel bikes.
