The center of Hulunbuir Heishantou grassland averages 10–24°C, while Hailar, the captial city, sits at 12–25°C. Days are comfortably mild, free from the stifling heat of southern China. Note the large temperature swing between day and night.
Start in Hailar amid endless Hulunbuir grasslands. Cycle north past Erguna’s wide wetlands and the birch-lined village of Enhe. Follow the K-line border road along the winding Erguna boundary river to Shiwei, tracing the western foothills of the Greater Khingan Range. Continue to Heishantou, famous for spectacular grassland sunsets, before looping back to Hailar.
Quieter, better value cycling June skips the crowded July and August summer peak. Fewer travellers share the roads, accommodation and local services are more affordable, making it a quieter and cost-effective window for cycling.
Fly into Hulunbuir Hailar Dongshan International Airport (HLD). Convenient connecting flights are available via major hubs including Beijing and Shanghai. Train connections are also available via Harbin or Beijing for travellers who prefer a slower journey.
This 10-day Hulunbuir cycling route crosses grasslands, wetlands, boreal forests and the China-Russia border X904 (K-line) highway. Paved asphalt roads dominate most sections, with gentle rolling hills rather than steep climbs. The route transitions from open steppe into the Greater Khingan Range forest belt, then back to grassland along the Erguna boundary river.
