Autumn in northern China is brief yet magnificent, with only two to three weeks of peak fall colours, making it the most sought-after season for this Hulunbuir to Mohe cycling tour. Starting on the Hulunbuir Grassland, you ride across sun-drenched golden meadows. Rolling steppes glow in warm gold, hay bales dot the wide plain, cattle and sheep graze leisurely, and the meandering Morigele River cuts through the golden grassland like a silver ribbon.
As you pedal north, grassland gradually gives way to the primeval forests of the Greater Khingan Range. Autumn hues grow richer and more layered. Silver birch trees turn bright golden, larch blazes amber, while shrubs burst into rust and scarlet against the deep evergreen of Scotch pine — forming the famous “five-colour mountain” landscape. This autumn cycling adventure lets you wind along quiet forest roads, where sunlight filters through the canopy. Golden birch leaves drift down in the breeze. Every turn reveals a new scene, as if cycling inside a living oil painting.
Your route follows the border alongside the calm Argun River, its blue waters mirroring the colourful woods on both banks. Further north, autumn deepens until you reach Mohe, China’s northernmost point. Here the fall foliage reaches its climax. The U-shaped bend of the Heilongjiang River is framed by multicoloured forests, and the quiet Arctic Village rests at the edge of this remote northern frontier.
This golden autumn cycling trip chases stunning fall colours from golden steppe to colourful boreal forest, one of the best autumn cycling routes in northern China. Free from the crowds of summer, northern China opens up in quiet grandeur. Every mile brings a fresh view of this unforgettable northern autumn on this bike tour from Inner Mongolia to Heilongjiang.
