About this tour

Pedaling to Paradise: A 7-Day Cycling Journey from Chengdu to Daocheng Yading

Chapter 1: A Journey from Urban Ease to Highland Majesty

This tour begins in the vibrant, laid-back city of Chengdu, where you can immerse yourself in Sichuan’s famed food culture and slow-paced lifestyle before setting off. From there, the route quickly transitions to the dramatic landscapes of western Sichuan, climbing to the breathtaking Balang Mountain Pass at 4,481 meters. The journey blends urban charm with raw natural beauty, taking you from green valleys and winding rivers to the vast, high-altitude grasslands of the Tibetan Plateau. Each day’s ride brings new vistas—snowy peaks, deep gorges, and flower-dotted meadows—unfolding like a living scroll of ever-changing scenery.

Chapter 2: Culture, Faith and Life on the Tibetan Plateau

More than a cycling route, this is a passage through living culture. You’ll ride into layered Tibetan villages like Jiaju, where smoke rises from traditional homes and herds slowly make their way home at dusk. You’ll cross through Tagong, whose name means “where Bodhisattvas delight,” and feel the spiritual presence of sacred Mount Yala. In Xinduqiao, everyday moments—a herder with yaks, an elder weaving—become frames of poetic simplicity. The journey traces not only geographic contours but also cultural transitions, from Qiang and Tibetan communities in Aba to the deeper Tibetan traditions of Ganzi, offering an intimate glimpse into highland life, faith, and resilience.

Chapter 3: Into the Heart of Shangri-La

The culmination of the journey is the arrival into Daocheng Yading, a region hailed as the “Soul of Shangri-La.” Here, three sacred snow peaks—Chenrezig, Jambeyang, and Chanadorje—stand guard over one of China’s most intact ecosystems. After days on the bike, you’ll explore this trekking paradise on foot, walking among glacial lakes, clear rivers, and pristine forests. The tour closes with a gentle transition—either a flight from Daocheng or a supported return to Chengdu—leaving you with memories of not only physical achievement, but of a landscape and a culture that feel both epic and intimate.

Itinerary

Friends with extra time are welcome to arrive a few days early to get used to Chengdu’s food and climate, and spend a few relaxing days enjoying the laid-back local lifestyle.

Stay in Siguniang Town. Cycling distance: 65 km. From Dengsheng Valley to Balang Mountain, about 37 km with an elevation gain of 2300 m, reaching the Balang Mountain Pass at 4481 m. The altitude climb may cause mild altitude sickness, and the guide will teach techniques to ease discomfort. Standing at the Balang Mountain Pass, snowy peaks seem within reach, and the view is filled with pristine white.

Cycling distance: 115 km, stay overnight in Jiaju Tibetan Village. After leaving Rilong Town, a 20 km downhill ride leads to Dawei Town, a crossroads with another road leading to Baoxing County via the Jiajin Mountain Pass. From Dawei to Xiaojin, the route is gently downhill for about 35 km to Xiaojin County. Energetic riders can tackle a small climb to visit the Red Army Memorial Square in town. After lunch in Xiaojin, we continue riding toward Danba, leaving the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture and entering the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. After 48 km, the layered Tibetan villages nestled on the valley slopes come into view. Amidst the rising smoke, yaks and sheep jingle their way home. This is a place where earthly life meets ethereal beauty.

Cycling distance: 111 km, stay overnight on Tagong Grassland. “Tagong” means “the place where Bodhisattvas delight” in Tibetan. Located on the plateau at 3730 m, it experiences four seasons in a day. Thanks to abundant sunshine and rain, it boasts lush pastures, blooming with wildflowers in summer. Behind the Tagong Monastery, the majestic Mount Yala stands tall, with its main peak reaching 5820 m—a sacred mountain in the Kham region.

Cycling distance: 80 km, stay overnight in Litang. In the morning, we pass through Xinduqiao, known as the “Photographer’s Paradise.” No extra lighting or posing is needed—every shot captures beauty. In the fields, Tibetan herders laugh and chat as they tend to their yaks and sheep; in the villages, elderly women hunch over their looms, weaving in the gentle passage of time. Nature is the finest colorist, and here, houses and trees, clouds and animals, all exist in perfect harmony.

Cycling distance: 55 km (from Haizi Mountain to Daocheng County). Arrive at the Yading Scenic Area around 4 PM, stay overnight in Yading Village. In the morning, we ride along the endless Maoya Grassland on the Liya Highway, enjoying the scenery as we head to the Haizi Mountain Glacial Stone River area. Following the Shuiluo River south, we reach the fairy-tale-like village of Daocheng Yading.

The evening marks the end of activities and the disbandment day. Today is spent exploring the Yading Scenic Area on foot. Centered around the three snowy peaks—Chenrezig, Jambeyang, and Chanadorje—the area stretches north to south and represents one of China’s most intact natural ecosystems. Known as the “Soul of Shangri-La,” it is a sacred destination for trekking.
