Cycling Through Hunan’s Heart: From Pandora’s Peaks to Chairman Mao’s Hometown
“April is the most beautiful time on earth. Amidst the blooming peach blossoms and willows, we will depart from the world-renowned Pandora (Zhangjiajie), pass through the ancient town of Furong Town perched on a waterfall, visit the ancient city of Fenghuang embraced by emerald waters, and arrive at the former residence of the great leader in Shaoshan Chong. Following in the footsteps of Chairman Mao’s academic journey, we will then enter the ancient city of Changsha.”
This route connects the most magnificent scenic spots, serene ancient border towns, vibrant ethnic cultures, and the world-famous former residence of the great leader, linking Hunan’s classic attractions with a distinct local flavor. Combined with the element of cycling, it promises to be an unforgettable travel memory. The cycling journey starts in Zhangjiajie and ends in Changsha, passing through Furong Town, Xiangxi Prefecture, Fenghuang, and Shaoshan. The total cycling distance is approximately 300 kilometers, offering a blend of leisure and challenge.
Highlights along the way: Wulingyuan Scenic Area – Furong Town – Fenghuang Ancient Town – Shaoshan Chong – Yuelu Mountain
After arriving at Zhangjiajie Airport around noon, embark on a 30 km warm-up ride to Wulingyuan District. Check in and stay overnight at a hotel in Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan District.
Spend the day exploring the Tianzi Mountain area of the Wulingyuan Scenic Spot. Overnight at an inn within the scenic area.
Visit the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park within the Wulingyuan Scenic Area. Overnight at a hotel in Zhangjiajie city center.
Cycle approximately 80 km from Zhangjiajie to Furong Town. Enjoy an evening tour of the ancient town, visit the Tusi Bridge, and immerse yourself in the local Tujia ethnic culture. Overnight at a folk-style inn in Furong Town.
Cycle about 80 km from Furong Town to Jishou City in the Xiangxi region. Overnight at a hotel in Jishou City.
Cycle around 45 km from Jishou City to Fenghuang. Explore the ancient town of Fenghuang, visit its eight famous scenic spots, and enjoy a boat ride on the Tuo River. Overnight at a hotel in Fenghuang.
In the morning, dive deeper into the culture of the Miao ethnic region. Afterward, take a 5-hour transfer to Xiangxiang City. Overnight at a hotel in Shaoshan City.
Cycle about 80 km from Xiangxiang City to Changsha, passing by Chairman Mao’s former residence in Shaoshanchong. In the evening, explore Yuelu Mountain and enjoy a panoramic night view of Changsha. Overnight at a hotel in downtown Changsha.
After breakfast, transfer to Huanghua Airport to conclude the wonderful journey.
