Traverse the Northern Secret Path: A 10-Day Wilderness Journey from China’s Arctic to the Hulunbuir Grasslands
Embark on this epic journey through the pristine wilderness of China’s northernmost frontier. This is more than just a cycling trip—it’s an in-depth exploration into the heart of nature and a quest for the charm of borderlands. Starting from Mohe, known as “China’s Arctic,” we travel south through the rolling forests of the Greater Khingan Range, the winding Ergun River, and the vast Hulunbuir Grasslands, all the way to the grassland city of Haillar. Each day, you will be immersed in a different landscape and story.
You will greet the dawn at the northernmost corner of China, cycle through preserved primeval forests, and feel the tranquility and grandeur of nature. You will visit peaceful border towns, gaze across the river at Russian scenery, and experience the blend of cultures. You will ride across the world-famous Hulunbuir Grasslands, where herds of cattle and sheep dot the horizon, and enjoy pure freedom and openness. We have carefully arranged a relaxed pace, including a full day of rest, allowing you time to absorb the scenery and engage deeply with local culture.
This route is designed for cyclists who love nature, yearn for distant places, and seek to break away from the ordinary. Whether you are a photography enthusiast, a nature explorer, or a seeker of inner peace, these 10 days will leave you with lifelong memories—of the forest’s breath, the grassland’s breeze, the borderland’s sunset, and the freedom of heading north.

The best time to ride is June to September, with cool temperatures ranging from 5°C to 25°C. Mid-July to late August (10 July – 20 August) falls during China's summer holiday season and can be very crowded, so we recommend June 1 – July 10, or August 20 – September 25, for a quieter, more enjoyable ride.
