Ride Through Legend: 8 Days of Freedom in Chifeng
When the first rays of dawn awaken the ancient totems of the Hongshan culture, a journey of freedom and grandeur begins right beneath your feet. This is not just endless grasslands—it is a living museum of nature’s finest carvings. It is not only a vault of history, but also a modern adventurer’s paradise.
On this immersive “Skyrider’s Journey,” we move beyond quick stops and photo ops, choosing instead to measure the land with our wheels and explore wonders with our own steps. From the profound history of the Chifeng Museum, we head north to meet Dali Lake—”the most beautiful teardrop of the grasslands,” where shimmering waters and dancing migratory birds await. We’ll ride deep into the heart of Gongger Grassland, galloping across the boundless greens of Bayan Chagan, feeling the wind of freedom rush past our ears.
We’ll climb Huanggangliang, explore the enchanted Asihatu Stone Forest carved by ancient glaciers, and listen for echoes of distant time among its fortress-like stones. Finally, we journey south to Yulong Sand Lake, the homeland of the “First Dragon of China,” to experience the thrill of dune-racing and the quiet poetry of a camel’s pace.
This is a legendary route that brings together stunning mountains, sweeping plains, serene lakes, and majestic desert—all in one journey. Over these eight days, you’ll travel through landscapes that shift like the seasons: days filled with breathtaking vistas, and nights under starry skies that speak to the soul.
Ready? Let’s meet in Chifeng. In this land of legends, rediscover your wildest, freest self.
Morning
Visit the Chifeng Museum, which houses tens of thousands of precious artifacts. Some of its collections have been displayed internationally in Japan, Europe, and the US, sharing the depth of Chinese history and culture. The museum highlights major cultural peaks in the Chifeng region—from the Neolithic Age and Northern Bronze Culture to the Liao, Jin, Yuan, and Mongol periods—showcasing the area’s rich archaeological and historical character. It gives you a full picture of each era’s unique cultural imprint.
Afternoon
Take a coach transfer to Dalainor Town, where you’ll join a welcome dinner arranged by the organizers. Enjoy traditional Inner Mongolian dance and song performances, followed by a cozy bonfire gathering in the evening
Today begins with cycling from Dalainor Town to Bayan Chagan. This year, a local grassland guide will lead the way, taking you deep into the heart of Inner Mongolia's prairie. We're all set with mountain bikes, perfect for an adventurous off-road ride through the core areas of the grasslands. The morning ride covers 50 km.
After lunch, we'll transfer by bus to the Bayan Chagan Grassland Base. There, you can enjoy a laid-back afternoon experiencing Mongolian culture:
Relax and soak in the peaceful, joyful vibe of a true grassland afternoon!
We’ll cover the highlight section of the journey, riding from Bayan Chagan through the Asihatu Stone Forest and on to Huanggangliang Scenic Area.
Morning: We’ll take a vehicle from Bayan Chagan to the Asihatu Stone Forest for a visit.
Lunch: Enjoy a meal at a local herder’s home.
Afternoon: Hop on your bike for a 40 km ride to Huanggangliang Scenic Area, passing by the stunning Asihatu Stone Forest along the way.
(About the Stone Forest)
"Asihatu" means "steep rocks" in Mongolian. This stone forest was formed mainly by the carving, digging, and erosion of ancient glaciers, along with the powerful flow of meltwater—that’s why it’s also called a "glacial stone forest."
Spend the whole day riding in 4x4 vehicles deep into the wilderness. Experience driving through untouched forests and open grassland landscapes on a self-drive-style journey.
Afternoon: Experience Authentic Mongolian Culture
Get a real taste of life on the prairie and discover the horse-riding traditions that shaped the people of the grassland.
You can choose to ride across the vast Mongolian steppe at your own pace!
(Note: Horse riding activity is optional and self-paid, ranging from 50–200 RMB based on route and duration.)
Evening Feast & Cultural Night
Dinner features a Mongolian specialty: a whole roasted lamb. Crispy on the outside, tender inside, and seasoned with aromatic cumin—it’s a true feast for the senses!
After eating your fill, immerse yourself in local customs, enjoy warm hospitality, and connect with the genuine spirit of the herders.
A night to fill your stomach and your heart with authentic grassland memories.
Today, we’re taking on the full loop around Dali Lake, covering a total of 90 km.
Dali Lake, whose name means "a lake like the sea" in Chinese, is one of Inner Mongolia’s four most famous lakes. Located in Hexigten Banner, Chifeng, this high-altitude lake stretches over 100 km in circumference and is shaped like a seahorse.
For this ride, we’ll skip half of the paved lakeside road and go off-road instead, bringing you closer to the lake and deeper into the landscape—truly showing you what’s called "the most beautiful tear of the Mongolian grassland."
Around the lake, you’ll spot more than 102 volcanic cones formed by intermittent eruptions dating back 1.64 million to 10,000 years ago.
After days of riding across the grasslands, we’ll wrap up the adventure with a special awards dinner tonight.
Every rider who completes the challenge will receive a Grassland Skyrider’s Journey commemorative medal and a certificate of completion!
Let’s make it a memorable finish!
